The Amedeo Textbook Awards create free medical textbooks (see web site). These textbooks are produced by members of the Amedeo Community, a group of more than 80,000 people who subscribe to the weekly Amedeo newsletter. Due to the concise content of the newsletters - long lists of "Author, Title, Journal, Volume, Page" plus links to abstracts (see example) - subscribers to Amedeo are typically clinicians and researchers working at the frontline of medicine.Immediately after publication, the free books are globally distributed by our main web sites, in particular Amedeo, Free Medical Journals, and FreeBooks4Doctors. Previous experience shows that top-quality textbooks achieve a wide distribution - 50,000 downloads in two months (see graph) and up to 100,000 downloads in one year. There is no doubt that these books contribute to the improvement of medical care.It has been my mission for 20 years to publish free medical textbooks, in particular 15 editions of HIV Medicine (818 pp) between 1991 and 2007, and Influenza Report (225 pp). In 2006, I privately funded the first Amedeo Award for a textbook on tuberculosis (687 pages). Two years later, I paved the way for financing a textbook on hepatology (501 pages). A third textbook on malaria is now on its way.The list of desirable free medical textbooks is long and we will need the contribution of sponsors to finance them. In exchange for sponsoring further Amedeo awards, sponsors will figure prominently on the first inner page of the books (see example). The amount required to create free medical textbooks is moderate:
To guarantee high-standard textbooks, Amedeo has established stringent procedures for quality control and supports the editors throughout the book production process. A practical guide on medical publishing is available at Free Medical Information (PDF, 94 pages). In summary, free medical textbooks produced by the Amedeo Community are state-of-the-art publications of outstanding quality. By the combined effect of efficient web promotion and mouth to mouth publicity, these books are rapidly distributed around the world, reaching all those who need information on the subject. In addition, they massively raise awareness about the sponsor's area of expertise. Finally, in terms of medical education, the return on investment is immense. Bernd Sebastian KampsEurope |
