The Guides

Flying Publisher Guides ("Free PDF - Print Edition for Sale") are concise medical and scientific guides of about 75 pages (word count: 15,000 to 20,000). The Guides target physicians, medical students and scientists and introduce a subject in two to three hours of reading. In addition, the Guides are information hubs. Readers who want to learn more on the subject will find a fine selection of important and preferably free web resources.

The Guides have a bottom-up approach – authors can freely chose their topic even if previous Flying Publisher publications have embraced the same topic (i.e., Influenza, Tuberculosis, or future publications; see www.FlyingPublisher.com). A format of 75 pages excludes covering the entire subject of, for example, cardiology, neurology or dermatology. Instead, the format favours the description of subtopics, single medical conditions (for example Alzheimer's Disease, Malaria, single cancer forms) or treatment and management issues such as HIV treatment, Diabetes management, etc. Whenever possible, recommendations should follow evidence-based guidelines.

Manuscripts are accepted in English, Italian, Spanish, French, and German.

The Authors

Top
  • Flying Publisher guides need to be written by at least 3 and no more than 6 authors. Two thirds of the authors must be researchers or clinicians in university or research institutions. Two thirds must also be 32 years or older. For clinical guides, two thirds of the authors must be clinicians.

Authors should be aware that it is unlikely that their personal scientific work will appear prominently in the Guides. With limited space available, even publications in top journals should not be mentioned in more than a few lines. By summarising what thousands of clinicians and researchers have discovered and developed, the Guides are a service to the readers. They should be a promotion of what you know, not a promotion of what you have done.

The Deadline

Top
  • Final Deadline

The authors determine their personal final deadline by registering for the Flying Publisher Guide Program. The deadline is 6 months after registration, on the first day of the following month, at 10:00 in the morning, Universal Time. (For example: If you register on 21 October 2012, the 6-month period ends on 20 April 2013.) If you need more time, register later.

By the final deadline, all fees have to be paid, either via an Amedeo grant or via private or institutional funding. The project will be put on hold until payment/grant has been confirmed.

    Interim Deadline

Flying Publisher Guides have an additional interim deadline five months before the final deadline. For the interim deadline the authors need to submit 1) an outline of the book chapters, including the approximate number of pages allocated to each chapter; 2) a 200-word summary for each chapter; 3) the first five pages of a chapter of your choice; 4) the preliminary version of the preface (no more than 250 words); 5) the preliminary version of the back cover text (no more than 60 words); and 6) the names, affiliations and email addresses of all authors.

The Flying Publisher Editorial Board will evaluate the submitted material within 14 days and contact the authors for any comments and suggestions.

Authors who want to apply for an Amedeo grant to pay the one-time Flying Publisher fee, can do so while submitting the material for the interim deadline. Grant applications will be reviewed within 28 days.

Instructions for Authors

Top
  • Flying Publisher will provide detailed Instructions for Authors, including a detailed timeline, templates for text editors and examples for tables and figures.

Copy-Editing

Top
  • Flying Publisher will handle neither copy-editing nor proofreading. For the Guides to be linguistically perfect, the authors should strongly consider the collaboration of a copy-editor.

For those who are not native speakers of the language they intend to use for publication (for example, your native language is Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Russian, Turkish, Arabic, Japanese, or Chinese, and you want to publish in English), the collaboration of a native speaking professional copy-editor is mandatory. At the moment of the submission of your guide, Flying Publisher will ask you to submit the name, email and phone number of the copy-editor.

Proofreading

Top
  • Manuscripts should not be submitted for publication without a final check by a professional proofreader.

Publish

Creating a PDF

Top
  • All manuscripts should be submitted as a PDF (Adobe Acrobat portable document format; .pdf) with all figures inserted in the same document. Legends for all figures should be included in the file with the text and should not appear on the figures.

The possibility of converting a text file into PDF is integrated into some word processors. In case this is not implemented in the word processor you are using, you can download special conversion software (commercial software or downloadable freeware) from the web. Practice the conversion of the file to the PDF format. If you are not familiar with the process, the conversion may take an extended period of time.

Submitting the PDF

Top
  • All files (outline, preface, back cover text, final PDF) must be submitted via Flying Publisher's Electronic Submission Service (ESS).

Sponsors

Top
  • As a general rule, sponsors must NOT be mentioned in Flying Publisher Guides. For detailed information about possible exceptions, please contact B. S. Kamps.

Conflict of Interest

Top
  • Authors of Flying Publisher Guides should disclose at the time of submission any financial arrangement they may have with a company whose product is pertinent to the submitted manuscript or with a company making a competing product. Such information will be held in confidence while the Guide is under review and will not influence the editorial decision. If a Guide is accepted for publication, a disclosure statement will appear with the Guide.

Editorial Board

Top
  • Manuscripts are accepted for consideration if neither the manuscript nor any part of its essential substance, tables, or figures has been or will be published or submitted elsewhere before appearing as a Flying Publisher Guide. This restriction does not apply to summaries of books previously published by Flying Publisher.

The Flying Publisher Editorial Board evaluates all eligible Guide proposals. We encourage authors to suggest the names of possible reviewers, but we reserve the right of final decision. Communication regarding manuscripts will be sent after the editorial decision-making process is complete. All authors will receive a copy of the acknowledgement e-mail and any notification of acceptance.

  • A Guide may be accepted for subsequent editions not earlier than one year and not later than three years after the publication of the latest edition.
